teba picked me up and took me straight to the little park in artxanda mountain that overlooks bilbao.

i stayed in gordexola, outside of bilbao.  the trevinos were incredibly hospitable.

the old country

as i’ve been preparing for my trip to spain and lebanon, i’ve been thinking a lot about my grandfather, Casey Cohlmia.

papa passed away in 2004 unexpectedly. i felt it was too early. we always had many passions and gifts in common, but i felt like we were just starting to connect on a deeper, more mature level. but who am i to question the One who gives and takes?

one passion we shared was for “the old country”, as he used to call it – lebanon. he and nana visited back in the ’70’s, but as far as i know, no one in our immediate family has been back since.

so… off i go. i don’t know what i expect to see, or experience. maybe understanding. of where humanity evolved. where hatred grew, and continues to grow. where Love incarnate transfigured, and walked this cursed soil, and died. appropriate meditations on Easter.

papa used to have some awesome letterhead that he printed everything on; business correspondence, graduation letters, birthday notes, etc. it was a caricature of his enormous bald head, smiling, with an unlit cigar protruding from the side of his mouth… in front of a typewriter (as he often was in real life… after all, he was a journalist, author, and marketing genius).

family members have always said that i favor his looks. so i had the thought the other day to compose a portrait of myself as Kenneth (Casey) Cohlmia.

i must say, i really like the result. but i’m pretty sure papa would not approve. he was way too clean shaven to ever look that raggedy…

we are the swarm

unfortunately, i wasn’t able to make it down to austin last week for sxsw.  however, all was not lost.  dallas reaps some of the benefits of south-by simply due to proximity.  so, when andrew bird came to town sunday night, i got a little taste of what makes the annual music showcase so special.

andrew bird just might be the most talented musician i have ever seen live.  it seems as though he thinks in terms of rhythm and sound textures.

and his lyrics are so technical and scientific, i sometimes feel that i’m in a trippy, high school biology class.  it’s great.

i tried to shoot some video, but handheld proved to be less than ideal.  regardless, here are a few short clips i strung together…

cover shoot

a few weeks ago i had a cover shoot for american motorcyclist magazine.  the subject was Mike Kraft, an iraq war vet, with a true love for motor bikes.

now, i’ve never been a huge fan of motorcycles, but i whole-heartedly identify with the individuality and love of the open road associated with bikers.  i’ve always said that i feel most at home in the mountains, but a close second is on the road.

Mike was a real pleasure to work with, and the type of thoughtful, strong individual that inspires confidence in the folks we have overseas.  he and i talked quite a bit about the middle east, and global politics.  he gave me some advice about my trip to lebanon, which is coming up in a few weeks.  and i’m very excited that i’ll get to test that advice very soon…

and so it begins…

i’m back in austin this weekend for a shoot, and once again i’m wondering why i don’t live here.  right now:  i’m at my favorite burger, beer, and darts joint, crown and anchor, watching my texas longhorns in the big 12 tournament semifinals, and it occurs to me – if i plan this out, i could be back here for good in a year.

dallas is crushing my spirit.  it’s time for a change.  austin, you’re on alert…

and so it begins…
