everglades // non-traditional fall colors

Color!  This time of year I start to think in terms of reds, oranges, and yellows.  But unfortunately, I will not be spending my autumn in the mountains in 2013.

However, it was massively inspiring to spend September in the Everglades, enjoying some deep greens and blues, purples and pinks.

white rock | aerials + lifestyle

White Rock Lake in Dallas is a very fun, active area, so it’s no wonder there is a good bit of development happening in and around the nearby neighborhoods.

The private and public sectors have invested massive amounts of money, and the result is a beautiful, hip, fun, and affordable location.

I’ve been getting more and more calls for aerials and lifestyle shots of the area… and luckily, it’s right in our backyard!  Love these jobs!!

Friday Flora

The Everglades ecosystem is about as diverse as they come.

And the plant-life is a large part of that diversity.

So I thought I’d share a few of my favorite flora related photographs from the trip, on this beautiful Friday!

These were all shot with the Canon 5D MK III… and I promise, a review of that camera is coming…

Free Tip Tuesday // Panning

Some common questions…

How do you stop motion in your photograph?  A fast shutter speed.  How do you show motion?  A slow shutter speed.

Well then, you might be asking, how do you stop the action of your subject, but convey motion by allowing everything else to blur from the movement?

It is a simple technique called “panning”.

ARS_WRRUN_20130930_6107

For this image of a runner, I wanted to make her sharp but also imply speed and action.

To achieve the look I wanted, panning was a must.  So at 1/50 sec, and a flash at camera left, I panned with the subject as she ran past.

A flash is not always necessary, but in this case it was since I wanted to backlight the subject with the sun to give dimension.

With basic panning, he key is moving your camera at the same speed as (or panning with) your subject.  It can take a few practice runs to get it right.

But the results will add an interesting element to your photograph that draw in the viewer.

One Shot Monday // A Primal Fear

If I had just one shot today to hold your attention, would this do it?

ARS_ENP_0913_0346_blog

This image can illicit a great deal of fear for a great many people.  The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is a fierce creature, and the largest venomous snake in North America.

Poised and ready to strike, this snake tastes the air with a forked tongue and collects heat signature data through its pits, just below the eyes.

Though frightening to most that cross it’s path, the pit viper is a very important part of the Everglades ecosystem.

Snakes help control the rodent and invertebrate population, as well as providing a great food source for other animals, like birds and alligators.

They are fantastically beautiful and amazing creatures!  And believe it or not, I’m thankful for this chance encounter…
