BRANDS + CREATIVES // Why We Need Them, and They Need Us

Creatives and brands have always had a close relationship, but there’s never been a time in history when these two groups have been more dependent on each other.

ARS_WY_20160130_3223

Content, content, content.

We are bombarded daily with images and moving clips. It comes from everywhere; TV, billboards, social media, news articles, texts, etc. If there’s one day that passes in our modern lives when we don’t look at hundreds of images and short clips, we’re likely dead. Where does all of this content come from?

ARS_WY_20160130_2959

ARS_EROCK_20151217_9560

Much of it is what is referred to as “user generated”. This just means, me and you, and every other Jo Schmo who snaps a pic with his iPhone and uploads it to Instagram. Well, this is a huge pool from which brands can draw. And it’s all free marketing.

So what about us? The professionals who make a living shooting for brands?

It’s the same old story since the beginning of commercial art… There’s always someone out there willing to give their work for free, and a host of creatives sit around bitching about how the market is flooded and so and so’s ruining our industry, and the sky is falling…. blah… blah… blah.

Well, I subscribe to the philosophy that we as creatives have an innate need to grow creatively and to work hard, contrary to popular belief. Clients will always recognize the inherent worth of our work, if we’re willing to create work that is worth anything! Even if it’s meant to look user gen.

So back to my point…. user generated content can only be taken so far. Companies know this. It is fantastic to mix in the user gen pics and video, but brands will always need professional quality and consistency. Even the big dogs can’t count on good user gen content everyday.

In the old days, a medium sized company would only license about a hundred images in a given year… now they will likely go through thousands. True, some of that is free content, but the amount of paid, licensed work a brand will purchase annually has skyrocketed.

The Old Faithfuls

That’s where creatives come in. The ones they can count on, every time.

More and more, I am creating “image banks” for my clients and brands, where they are able to go and grab what they need, when they need it, to fill in the user gen gaps. They even find it useful for print and other marketing needs.

It’s a great relationship. We want to be out there being creative, pushing ourselves and growing. They need eye catching imagery, again and again and again…. So be sure you are there when they need you.

The market is definitely changing. But in my opinion, there’s more of a need for us “old faithfuls” out there than there ever has been. The world is only demanding more and more content, and it does’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. So, as much as we need them (so we can continue to put food on the table and pay rent)… they need us, and our creative, beautiful, and consistent content.

In honor of the NPS Centennial this year, I have put together a special collection of (some never before seen) my favorite National Park prints. Please check it out and know that 5% of all the profits from the sale of this artwork will be donated to a wonderful organization that works hard to help preserve our Nation’s most magical places, The National Park Foundation.. We will be visiting almost all of the 59 National Parks this year, so check back often as we will be updating the page regularly. Thank you so much for your support!

SUMMER // INTERNSHIP

Are you a dreamer?  Do you know how to be more than a dreamer… someone who does?  Where do you want to be in 5 years?

I have been a professional stills + motion photographer for over a decade, and it remains the best and hardest thing I have ever done.  Give me a hand on everything from commercial location shoots, tagging and categorizing stock, shooting and editing motion clips, and possibly even do a little shooting of your own.

I travel a lot, and there is the possibility for the right candidate to experience some of the excitement of traveling on assignments.  Come help and learn as you get started in your own visual career.

This is unpaid for the summer, but positions are available and interns will most certainly be at the top of the heap…. unless you’re a horrible, terrible person. :)

DATES: JUNE 2 – AUG 24 (DATES CAN BE FLEXIBLE)

Applicants must possess:

  • a hunger for something better
  • a strong visual IQ (we want to see your portfolio!)
  • an inquisitive mind, and positive attitude
  • working to advanced knowledge of Adobe PS + LR (Premier Pro + AE huge plus)
  • working to advanced knowledge of how to shoot photo + vid on DSLRs
  • ability to take direction and act quickly

“OK, GREAT.  WHAT DO I GET OUT OF THIS??” — YOU

In a word… experience.  Okay, two words… working knowledge.  Three?  A leg up.

The way a photography internship should work (and will here), is that you, the intern, work hard, and in turn, I, the photographer, impart special knowledge and real world know how that you wouldn’t get from a blog post or youtube video.  You also gain access to all of my equipment… to practice, shoot tests, learn different lighting styles, etc.  Some may even get to travel on assignments, or get a paying job in the end.

It’s a trade.  My knowledge and experience for your time and help!

Let me know why you are the ONE!

white rock | aerials + lifestyle

White Rock Lake in Dallas is a very fun, active area, so it’s no wonder there is a good bit of development happening in and around the nearby neighborhoods.

The private and public sectors have invested massive amounts of money, and the result is a beautiful, hip, fun, and affordable location.

I’ve been getting more and more calls for aerials and lifestyle shots of the area… and luckily, it’s right in our backyard!  Love these jobs!!

I always love it when commercial real estate clients call.

And since the 80’s, Dallas has been a huge commercial real estate hub, so thankfully, there’s a lot of business.

Architecture and urban landscape are a very natural transition for me from traditional landscapes and nature photography.

Plainly speaking, architecture is man-made landscape, often mimicking the shapes and movements of nature.

Photographically, it’s just as exciting and challenging when done well.

To add to the challenge, often times I’m asked to shoot little vignettes of the surrounding attractions; active lifestyles, restaurants/ bars, nightlife, etc.

These are generally very well rounded assignments.  And I absolutely love the technical and creative challenges of shooting different subjects and styles.

TULIP series | photos

lately, i’ve been wanting to do a series of photographs that illustrate the five points of Calvinism. strange, i know. but these concepts intrigue me.

i’ve had many odd images in my head for some time, and they are just now starting to come together and make a little sense.  to me at least.

basically, Calvinism is known by an acronym: T.U.L.I.P.  i found a lot of great information at the Calvinist Corner blog, check it out if you’re interested in more background.

i’ll leave the interpretation up to the viewer.  feel free to comment… more images to follow.
