Layering // Landscapes

If you’ve seen my work, you know that I love negative space.  And in landscapes, that often means lots of sky.

ars_blog_wy_0174

It’s a more fine art look. Where the sky is an actor in the play. Usually dramatic clouds, color, and or celestial bodies give weight and relevance to the otherwise vast expanse of negative space.

But that’s not the “postcard” look.  The more I shoot for stock, the more I’ve learned to layer my landscapes to give them more dimension and a greater sense of depth.

It’s a very basic concept, that to many of you is a “duh”.  But it wasn’t to me.  I learned to shoot from feeling; to convey deep emotions and artistic expression.  And the way that manifests often times in my work, is with a very two dimensional feel where the depth is stripped away and the viewer is left with light, color, and basic shape.

Neither way is better than the other.  Some people have an eye for the 3-D postcard, and others, the 2-D expression.

I have had to learn to see the postcard. And I’m really enjoying the challenge of seeing in this new way.  It sounds simple, but it’s oh so interestingly complicated… to frame a balanced and compelling photograph that incorporates all three elements: foreground, middle ground, background.

ars_blog_wy_0182

These three elements working together, with lines leading the viewer into the image, colors complimenting one another, and light dancing and playing makes for a supremely sellable image.

And I would argue, that beyond the sellable, if you can also incorporate the artistic expression, you have made truly great art.

Those are the kind of images I’m striving to make.

Big Bend // R+R

stars over the chisos basin in big bend national park, texas

You can’t travel all the way to Marathon, TX for work and not at least spend a night or two under the stars in Big Bend.

So after our interior shoot for the Gage Hotel, we did just that.  And I barely even picked up my cameras.  I know, hard to believe… but it’s true.

A lone coyote wanders the desert in Big Bend National Park, Texas

We did see a coyote wandering the lonely draws and bluffs in the iconic desert landscape… so of course I had to snap one…

And then we did a quick Ellen Slaton | yoga commercial shoot for my wife’s new venture.

She recently finished teacher training here in Dallas and is now a certified yoga instructor!

ARS_ESY_20140131_6953

Her heart is to “love others through the practice of yoga and perhaps share a bit of the peace I find when I can escape to my mat, chill out my brain, listen to the Lord, & find strength…”

Thankfully, we found a little peace in the desert that weekend after a long week of working hard.  It’s important sometimes for me to set my camera down and use my own God-given senses.  It doesn’t happen often enough… but now I’m making a conscious effort.

Ray Roberts // Night Lights

ARS_RRSP_140321_5258

Elle and I were itching to sleep out beneath the stars, so we made a last minute trip up to Lake Ray Roberts State Park to do some weekend car camping.  Not a bad spot at all.  Beautiful lakefront campsites, nice neighbors, and all the stars we could handle.

I even played around a bit, experimental painting with cell phone lights, headlamps, and flashlights.

Sometimes I forget how important it is for me as a photographer to still get out there and “play”.  I get used to the dog and pony show of being a professional where I feel like I have to act as though I know absolutely everything there is to know about light and photographic processes.  The truth is; I am always learning and growing.  And the minute I reach a point where I know everything… well, I imagine I can just pack it in and lie down to die… because it certainly won’t be challenging and fun anymore.

I sure hope that day doesn’t come anytime soon.  I’m looking forward to “playing” and learning more this year.  Join me!

Gage Feature

20140322-102729.jpg

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to shoot an iconic Texas hotel in Big Bend country, the historic Gage. It also happens to be one of mine and Elle’s favorite getaways :)

They recently posted an interview and shared a few of my images from January. Check it out!

And if you’re ever in the area… You have to go stay at this beautiful hotel. It really is a Texas treasure.
