ah… my favorite city in texas….
i’ll be visiting you a lot this summer…
my favorite french musician, yann tiersen, came to dallas (of all places) a few weeks ago.
he is best known for composing the amelie soundtrack, but his repertoire is comprehensive and complex.
tiersen does it all; from traditional french accordion compositions, to classical violin melodies… he even performs pop, rock, and hip hop.
this show was mostly his hard rock stylings, and ethereal post-rock, violin infused atmospheres.
it was a real bonus as well to have local favorite doug burr opening for yann…
doug is a folk artist, with a southern tinge. his melodies are hypnotic and lyrics thoughtful.
yann came out with force behind strings…
he even played the mouth accordion.
it was such a treat to see yann tiersen live. to have him come to dallas, texas… i still can’t believe it.
q: what’s not quite as good as going to the mountains, but a hell of a lot better than staying in dallas for the weekend?
a: car camping at a state park for a few days… weekend warrior style.
i made the 30 hour round-trip drive up to telluride, colorado at the end of february to celebrate my best friend john’s 30th birthday…
there are not many places i’d rather be for any occasion. we enjoyed great wine, great friends, and equally great scenery…
on the way home, i took a route i’ve never taken before. vast landscapes, towering earthen spires, and telephone poles dominated my field of vision.
maybe pointing my camera out the car windows while driving is not the smartest or safest practice, but it kept me busy.
all in all, i think i spent as much time driving to and from as i did in telluride… but as willie sings… we wouldn’t have it any other way.
elle, hunter trek, and i spent valentines day out at caddo lake on the texas-louisiana border. swamp country.
it’s a whole other world out there. we enjoyed the signs in uncertain, texas…
it was incredibly cold, but by far the best valentines day i’ve ever had. neither of us like the “holiday” and feel it’s a bit contrived.
but spending the weekend hiking, playing card games, cooking out, and drinking wine was so enjoyable, i think it might become a tradition.
