vermejo again

i was lucky enough to be invited back to vermejo last week for another shoot.

there are a few groups of ferrel horses on the property.  they don’t call them wild because at some point they were broken and used by humans.  but they are now ferrel because they have been released and are free to roam the 600k acres.

i came across a group of about a dozen on the road down to the main lodge.  i stopped the car and stepped out to snap a few shots.  two of the horses came right up to me and began sniffing.  they gently rubbed their long faces against me.

i had no idea what was going on, but it seems these powerful, wild creatures wanted to be friends.  perhaps they missed the strange bond that horses and humans share.

one of them seemed interested in tasting my camera.

_MG_2032AS

i had a strong urge to hop up on one of their backs and see if they remembered what it was like to transport a human to and fro.  i decided against that idea.

it was really hard to get back in the car and leave my new friends…

_MG_2129AS

but i did.  after all, we had lots of great wine to drink…

_MG_2281AS

the next day, we set out for lower underwood lake to catch some trout.  i have never fly fished before, so i thought i’d give it a try…

_MG_2292AS

with the help of a fantastic guide, and a lot of luck, i got to land a 3 lb brown.  good looking fish!

_MG_2328AS

that afternoon, john and i headed for the streams.  fly fishing streams is a whole different game, and frankly, my confidence was high and i wanted to give that a shot as well.

the weather had different plans however.  the sky opened with reckless fury.  lightning and wind kept us from fishing the rest of the day.

_MG_2393AS

we set out at 6 a.m. the next morning to catch our flight out of amarillo.  on the way out of vermejo, we were treated to a spectacular sunrise.

i sincerely hope i have the opportunity to return, some day.

outside telluride

my friend bd and i pulled in to telluride mid-day saturday.  sunny and 72 degrees.  mountains all around.  fantastic.

we got a bite to eat at smugglers, then spent the rest of the day at brown dog drinking full flavored ipa’s and watching the rangers beat the bosox.

i love telluride.  i lived and worked here in the summer of 2000 with one of my best friends, john.  and since then, i’ve been back more times than i can remember.  but what i appreciate most about this part of colorado is the insane beauty.

so, i decided on sunday to take a short trip up to alta lakes to spend a solitary night in the high country of the san juans.

the road up is narrow, but stunning.

i found a perfect campsite, but this wasn’t it.  i went ahead and made camp at this spot, which was really nice, but i chose it specifically because of the view.

as the sun dropped behind me, the light played a symphony with colors in ripples on the lake.

all of the afternoon fishermen left, and i was completely alone as darkness came.  it reminded me of why i live for solitude in the wilderness:

it’s terrifying.  but it’s also soul-washing.  experiencing the primal fears that we in modern life have lost touch with, are essential to my sanity.

late at night, i shot a 1 hour exposure of the view from my tent…

vermejo, nm

this week i was invited to vermejo park ranch in northern new mexico to shoot phenomenal scenery, fly fishing, and wildlife.  no complaints here._MG_6803AS

ted turner’s private home near the main lodge is quite impressive.  but even more awe-inspiring is the sheer size of the property.  at just under 600,000 acres, vermejo is the largest privately owned parcel of land in the u.s.

_MG_6851AS

aside from the common bee, vermejo is home to elk, black bear, mountain lion, and one of the largest herds of american bison in the world.

we found their truck recently ransacked by a bear.

_MG_8101AS

_MG_8102AS

we must have scared it off when we pulled up, judging by the minimal amount of damage done to the refreshments.

_MG_8103AS

looked like he climbed up the side of the truck-bed to get a better look.

…last week in wyoming…

_MG_4259AS

_MG_4281AS

one of my first, and best, friends when i lived in wyoming was kim.  she recently got married and had a gorgeous little girl, kate.  first thing’s first… i had to go see them.

_MG_4290AS

now on to my animals.  a coyote searches for food in the elk national wildlife refuge near jackson.

_MG_4313AS

_MG_4318AS

_MG_4329AS

two ocean lake in teton wilderness provided fantastic scenery.

_MG_4345AS

_MG_4375AS

_MG_4387AS

_MG_4389ASBW

on the way out of two ocean and pacific creek, one of my favorite views of the tetons materializes quickly.  almost out of nowhere, the jagged peaks come into view with force and drama.

_MG_4399AS

_MG_4402AS

_MG_4433AS

_MG_4438AS

then, of course, the jackson lake dam provides unimpeded views of this beautiful mountain range, the grand tetons.

_MG_4472AS

_MG_4509AS

a lone big horn ram wandered, grazed.

_MG_4519AS

early in the morning, the elk eat dew-covered grasses.

_MG_4528AS

_MG_4529AS

_MG_4533AS

lamar creek.  the hidden gem of the lamar valley.  always one of my favorite spots to sit in the morning.

_MG_4545AS

the lamar valley in the summer is a haven for the american bison.  they graze it heavily in massive swarms.

_MG_4573AS

the lamar valley is also home to many bears.  this pair, one black bear and one cinnamon black were inseparable as i watched them cross miles of open landscape.  i saw this same cinnamon about four years ago in the exact same spot.  glad to see he’s got a lady to keep him company now…

_MG_4582AS

bull elk are scattered across yellowstone this time of year.  typically alone, they seem to know that the autumn rut and breeding season will be coming in a few short months.

_MG_4594AS

sulphur stained ponds dot the landscape of yellowstone.

_MG_4672AS

a lone black bear on the northeast entrance road scavenges in the shadow of the mountains surrounding the montana/ wyoming border, near cooke city.

_MG_4705AS

not even a mile away from the bear, a fox too looks for an evening snack.

_MG_4707AS

_MG_4710AS

on the road to lulu pass, just outside city limits, seedlings, clear cuts, mountains, and sky provide the backdrop for cook city, montana.

_MG_4712AS

_MG_4718AS

_MG_4725AS

early morning, heading back from a night spent at the cooke city dump, the mountains and fog performed a ballet.  mist danced across the tops of trees as the light watched passively from behind the clouds.

_MG_4733AS

and it only gained dramatic crescendo as i made my way back, further into the lamar valley of yellowstone.

_MG_4799AS

after a long morning hike up the side of a peak in the lamar, a lone antelope kept his distance.

_MG_4881AS

_MG_4915AS

a 45 minute exposure at oxbow bend in grand teton national park, well after sundown.

_MG_5044AS

_MG_5055AS

_MG_5062AS

string lake, near jenny lake, grand teton national park.

_MG_5074AS

back to my old haunt in sublette county… green river lakes in bridger-teton national forest.

_MG_5084AS

the lower lake was in tumult, with wild winds from the south rumbling like a freight train through the valley toward the upper green.

_MG_5123AS

the green river was calm the next morning, though the sky overhead read drama.

_MG_5144AS

i hiked the highline trail toward the upper lake.  squaretop mountain spectacularly reflected the patches of sun.

_MG_5145AS

_MG_5175AS

_MG_5185AS

i followed massive grizzly tracks all the way to the upper lake about three miles.  it was not alone.  two smaller sets of tracks alerted me to the fact that a sow with two yearlings could be around any bend.

_MG_5199AS

on the way into little soda lake, the aspen groves catch a reflection more colorful than reality.

_MG_5216AS

cactus patches keep me aware of where i place my feet…

_MG_5239AS

just a few minutes from the front door of my old house in pinedale, soda lake reflects the wind river mountains, creating impressionistic hues that would make any artist salivate.
